Final round of true beta invitations just sent

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Peyton Stafford here. We sent the final round of invitations to people who volunteered to try the “true beta” version of GTDInbox Plus Beta. We have been collecting error reports and narratives of our brave volunteers and plan to begin releasing new versions, next week.

We will probably have to release a rapid series of updates as we fine-tune our code to eliminate loading and other errors. These next releases should become trouble-free enough for people who declined the true beta stage to try.

Please keep an eye on this blog and on the NEW sign in the left sidebar of GTDInbox for more information.

Best,

Peyton

First Batch of GTDInbox Plus Beta Invitations Has Gone Out

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

We sent email invitations to about 50 previous donors, inviting them to upgrade to GTDInbox Plus Beta. They must have been waiting because they started installing GTDInbox Plus Beta within minutes. We are now contacting them via email so we can make sure their upgrades go as smoothly as possible.

Once we work through any glitches that they encounter, we will send another batch of invitations. If you haven’t already signed up for the upgrade, then follow this link to the GTDInbox Plus Beta Waiting List and sign up, now.

GTDInbox Plus Beta is Launching — Sign Up Now

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

This is our longest post in a while, but we have great news! If you’re short of time, I suggest you jump straight to How Do I Get GTDInbox Plus Beta. Also, Peyton & I will be on hand to answer your comments below – we look forward to hearing your thoughts! Thanks, Andy

What is GTDInbox Plus Beta and Why Are We Launching It?

After over three years of development and community building, we are launching GTDInbox Plus Beta. This enhanced version includes several new features to speed up your work. We will be adding more features every month during the coming year. We anticipate keeping the beta designation at least through March of 2010.

One of our goals has always been to put GTDInbox onto a solid financial basis so that it will be self-supporting and so we can continue development. We have reached the point at which GTDInbox requires the work of additional engineers, workflow experts and others beyond our core team. As we add more sophisticated features, we need more help developing and maintaining them so that they will work dependably in FireFox as well as in Chrome. GTDInbox Plus Beta will be our first paid product, and it will provide the income we need to create a truly amazing product.

What about Chrome?

Along with launching GTDInbox Plus Beta, we are working on bringing GTDInbox to Google Chrome. Expect to hear more about this over the next few weeks. Once we launch the Chrome port, you will be able to use GTDInbox Free and GTDInbox Plus Beta on Chrome as well as on FireFox. We are looking at other browsers and email systems, as well. In the long term, we want to make our approach to email available to everyone, regardless of the specific email system, client or browser they are using.

How Do I Get GTDInbox Plus Beta?

We are rolling out GTDInbox Plus Beta in stages to reduce the possibility of server overload and to maintain our high level of customer support during the upgrade. We will give priority to people who have been supporting GTDInbox with donations. They can expect to receive invitations from us via the PayPal email address they used to donate. Everyone else who is interested in purchasing GTDInbox Plus Beta can add themselves to to the GTDInbox Plus Beta Waiting List right now.

We will be sending out invites to purchase a discounted GTDInbox Plus Beta by email to previous donators and people on the waiting list over the coming weeks, on a first come, first serve basis.

What’s New in GTDInbox Plus Beta? What Will It Do for Me?

GTDInbox Plus immediately adds three new features, greater support, and priority access to all updates.

Those features include:

  • Reply to Self — add private notes to conversations quickly
  • Expanded Archive Button –archive, mark as spam, delete and move to next (or back), plus more, with one click.
  • “Send and” — easily change a conversation’s status (and/or mark it End Of Message) when you send a reply
And the future…

We plan to add another new feature – just for GTDInbox Plus users – every two weeks. Here is our current list. Please let us know at GTDInbox UserVoice if you have other feature requests, and what you think our priorities should be.

Some things we have planned include:

  • Great control with deadlines for emails and calendar integration
  • Automation with simple macros, smart labeling and keyboard shortcuts
  • Improved relationships with contact management
  • Understand your email habits with performance stats
  • Enhance Gmail with social networks integration
  • And more…

Our overall goal is to make email manageable and you a master of the tasks and responsibilities flowing by as you communicate with your colleagues, partners and customers.

Using the excellent feedback from thousands of our users combined with the new revenue stream, GTDInbox Plus Beta marks the beginning of a rapid advance in feature development. The result will be faster, more efficient email for all of us.

Mega Update: GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 17

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

It would be wrong to start this post without a brief bout of personal recrimination – this release is hugely overdue, blowing our weekly releases out of the water. It started simply enough, but this snowballed into a complete rewrite of our Popup (which  itself represents a major part of GTDInbox) and, well, nearly three weeks later here we are!

So what has the Popup rewrite yielded? For starters, its faster – it should appear quicker, change tabs more seamlessly and scroll more smoothly. There is now ‘Group By’ buttons to group threads by Project, Context, Contact and List. And perhaps most importantly of all (not to mention one of the most requested features), you can now resize the Popup. It sounds minor, but so far it’s had a big impact on usability. (Less interestingly, the whole thing is now much more expandable for the future).

The Sidebar box has changed too. It’s a lot tidier, thanks to Pete’s handy work, the Statuses have been replaced with ‘Views’ (e.g. Tasks To Do, Waiting On, Some Day), and Label Categories have a better visual indication of what needs your attention. Following the discussion in the last blog post (http://blog.gtdinbox.com/2009/08/07/design-discussion-labels-on-sidebar/), it’s also more stable – it needs a click to appear, and it stays there until you click it off.

Finally – and this is just a little nod to a big irritation of mine – the new Gmail ‘Recent Labels’ (the one that pushes everything in the sidebar down), can now be hidden; to save lots of space.

As this is a big change, I’m playing it a little cautious – it will be on the blog for a day or two before I push it to Mozilla. We’re also about ready to enter Beta status – if this release goes okay, we’ll move up to the next level.

** Update Thur 27th August **

Okay, it would appear that there are problems for lots of you :( As far as I can work out, the major ones appear to be interference with/from Java QuickStarter (jqs@sun.com), a failure to load until you change view (e.g. click a label), and the X selecting everything… plus some smaller usability issues (which should be a quick fix).

If anyone can help – either by screenshare, or just talking me through what they’re seeing, please drop me an email (andy@gtdinbox.com) and let’s get this fixed.

GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 15 – Urgent Upgrade

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Right, deep apology time. I changed something truly minor in Alpha 14, so small I didn’t even test it (quite simply, a ” instead of a “”); and it completely broke Alpha 14 for fresh installs. The worst part is, for any other Alpha, that would be fine (as the Alphas don’t pick up many new users) – EXCEPT this was the first version that was sent to Mozilla Addons for automatic distribution :D My stomach is only just starting to unknot…

Right, this is tested for new users, old users, Firefox and Flock; and I’m as confident as I can be with the Alphas that it will at least install okay.

Just in case it does not fix itself, try removing the preferences to force a reset. This includes,
1) Close all Gmail tabs
2) Open about:config (and agree to the warning)
3) Search for ‘extensions.gtdinbox’ items
4) Right click each one, and select ‘Reset’
5) Restart Firefox
6) Open Gmail again
7) Restore any Options you had

And finally, the proper update news for this release is back in http://blog.gtdinbox.com/2009/07/29/gtdinbox-3-0-alpha-14-now-on-mozilla/

As usual, install right now by going to http://www.gtdinbox.com/gettingstarted.htm (and click Refresh if it still shows Alpha 14).

PS Thanks to Alex Gold for helping me discover this – it’s prompted 2 crazy hours of bug fixing; but without Alex this would have gone unnoticed a lot longer!

GTDInbox 3.0 Alpha 14 – Now on Mozilla!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

We hit a pretty big milestone tonight – we’ve finally sync’d the website (check out http://www.gtdinbox.com) and Mozilla Addons.

This comes with a huge personal sigh of relief, as it painful knowing Mozilla Addons (which is how most people are introduced to GTDInbox) was desperately out of date. Hopefully this puts us on a great track for smoother updates in the future.

This update is pretty boring – in a good way – as it’s just bug fixes. Thanks hugely to Glen Norris, Peyton Stafford, Mickey Clements and Mark Cranmer for their assistance in identifying and closing bugs. The principle change is we’re now a lot more sophisticated about the Offline Mode. It’s not solved, but it does at least now recognise when it’s in Unstable Mode and rather than crashing, automatically disables itself (and reenables when you leave Unstable Mode).

Okay, if you like how we’re progressing, it would be a huge favour to me if you could give us a great (5 star?!) review on Mozilla Addons. As 2.x fell out of date, people got upset and started leaving bad reviews – which has a longterm effect on our reputation. The website is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3209/ :)

The new version can be retrieved right now: http://www.gtdinbox.com/gettingstarted.htm

It’s back to exciting feature development in the next release!
Andy

PS If you’re wondering where A13 went… well… Peyton needed an interim version to help diagnose a bug, giving me a great excuse not to have to release the Mozilla milestone as Number 13. Phew ;)
